BDN-716 is a robust pigeon pea variety developed through advanced breeding techniques to ensure high yield and resilience across diverse agro-climatic zones. Plants reach 120–140 cm in height with a well-branched canopy, enabling easy harvesting and efficient light interception. Field evaluations report yields of 1.8–2.2 t/ha under optimal management, even in semi-arid regions receiving as little as 500 mm annual rainfall. The deep, fibrous root system confers strong drought tolerance, while genetic resistance to Fusarium wilt, sterility mosaic virus and major pod borer complexes reduces reliance on chemical controls. Seeds are uniform in size, bright red, and exhibit rapid hydration, low split rates and superior flavor, making them highly prized in both fresh and processed markets. Best performance is observed on loamy to sandy-loam soils with pH 6.0–8.0 under recommended nutrient and water management practices.
